Overview

What Is the AIGP Certification?

Offered by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the AIGP is built for people who need to understand, implement, and oversee responsible AI governance. As organizations race to adopt AI, the credential signals that you can guide ethical deployment, manage AI risk, and keep pace with new AI laws and frameworks.

It was the first widely recognized certification to treat AI governance as a professional discipline in its own right — rather than a bolt-on to privacy work.

Exam Topics

Key Topics Covered

The AIGP spans the full governance lifecycle — from foundational concepts to agentic AI systems and cross-border compliance obligations.

1

AI Foundations & Use Cases

Core AI concepts, system types, machine-learning basics, and how AI is applied — and impacts people — across industries.

2

Responsible AI Principles

Fairness, transparency, accountability, safety, and human oversight — and how to build them into development and deployment.

3

AI Laws & Regulatory Frameworks

Current and emerging AI legislation: the EU AI Act, US federal and state laws, South Korea's AI Basic Law, and the ISO/IEC 42005 impact-assessment standard.

4

AI Lifecycle Governance

Governance from data collection through development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and retirement — with the documentation each stage demands.

5

AI Risk Management

Spotting and mitigating risks: bias and discrimination, third-party vendor exposure, automated-decision harms, and high-risk system classification.

6

Agentic AI & Emerging Concerns

Governing autonomous multi-agent systems, privilege-escalation risks, feedback loops, and the accountability gaps agentic architectures introduce.

2026 Exam Updates

What's New in the 2026 AIGP Exam

The 2026 exam runs on Body of Knowledge version 2.1 — a real shift in emphasis, not a light refresh. Knowing what changed is essential for anyone preparing today.

Key Changes in AIGP BoK v2.1

A move from governing isolated AI models to managing end-to-end AI systems — pipelines, deployment infrastructure, and operations included.
New coverage of agentic AI: autonomous multi-agent setups, privilege-escalation risk, and governance feedback loops.
Explicit testing on Fundamental Rights Impact Assessments (FRIA) for high-risk AI systems.
Expanded legal scope — EU AI Act, US federal and state laws, South Korean AI law, and the new ISO/IEC 42005 standard.
Sharper focus on provider, developer, deployer, and user roles — and who owns which obligation at each stage.
Study Guide

How to Prepare and Pass the AIGP

Because the AIGP tests governance reasoning rather than recall, the best preparation blends the current Body of Knowledge with plenty of scenario practice.

1

Use 2026 Materials Only

Confirm your study guide references BoK v2.1. Older 2025 material misses agentic AI, FRIA, and ISO/IEC 42005 — all now tested.

2

Master the EU AI Act & US AI Laws

Legislation carries real weight. Learn the EU AI Act's risk-based tiers and how US federal and state rules interact with them.

3

Get the Role Distinctions Straight

Know how provider, developer, deployer, and user differ — and which obligations attach to each. Scenario questions lean on this constantly.

4

Study Agentic AI Governance

Understand the fresh risks agentic and multi-agent systems bring: privilege escalation, feedback loops, and accountability gaps.

5

Drill Scenario Questions

The exam rewards applied judgment. Practice mapping frameworks onto realistic situations until the reasoning is second nature.

After Certification

Keeping Your Certification Current

Valid for 2 years — 20 CPE credits to renew

Once you pass, the AIGP stays valid for two years. To maintain it, complete 20 continuing-education credits aligned to the AIGP Body of Knowledge through IAPP-approved activities. Members have the maintenance fee covered by membership; non-members pay a $250 fee at recertification.
